The Bulgarian Evangelical Theological Institute (BETI) was founded on November 2, 1999. In the capital of Sofia the leaders of the major evangelical denominations – Congregational, Baptist, Methodist, Church of God, United Church of God, and Assemblies of God, constituting the Bulgarian Evangelical Alliance (BEA), signed an agreement for the founding of one formal educational institution that will seek legalization and then accreditation with the Bulgarian government.
Its purpose was to become the representative institution of the evangelical education in Bulgaria. Under its umbrella were covered four already functioning denominational Bible colleges. These four existing school were to be transformed into theological faculties (or extensions) of BETI. Three of them were founded in the capital of Sofia – The United Church of God College, The United Theological College and the Pentecostal/ Assemblies of God College. The fourth one was the Bulgarian Theological College, founded in 1997 in Stara Zagora.
The founders of BETI agreed that the most important tasks of the newly founded educational institution were: (1) to meet the educational needs of the founding evangelical denominations, and (2) to meet the criteria for higher education programs of the Bulgarian Ministry of Education. The desire of all founding 6 denominational leaders, who became the Governing Board of the institution, was to create a unique organization, which would serve the purpose of administrative unity and will create a practical, adequate and effective academic curriculum, which would then be implemented in all four faculties.
